He was a retired employee of General Motors division in Detroit and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the United Auto Workers, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Eastside Baptist Temple in Detroit.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Johnnie Belle Martin Oliver; three sons, John Hulitt Oliver of Brighton, Josh Wayne Oliver and Edd Howard Oliver, both of Roseville, a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Taylor of Wallonia; a brother, Hulit Oliver of Cadiz; three sisters, Clara Nell Biggs of Lake Village, Jane Litchfield of Cadiz, and Dorothy Coleman of Princeton, and 11 grandchildren. NOTICE Effective January 1, 1987, McCracken County has imposed a license fee or occupational tax upon all persons engaged or employed in any trade, occupation or profession within the County. The tax on employees is one percent of gross wages, salaries, commissions, etc. Each person so employed and paying an occupational tax to the City of Paducah shall be entitled to credit for the sums so paid to the City of Paducah. MacDonald, whose 77 novels included the colorfully titled series about the philosophical, offbeat problemsolver Travis McGee, has died at the age of 70. MacDonald, of Sarasota, died Sunday at St. Mary's Hospital of complications following heart bypass surgery there in September. In a writing career spanning more than 40 years, MacDonald wrote more than 500 pieces of fiction. Many of his books, including the McGee novels, included a color in the title.
More than 30 million copies of the McGee novels have been printed in the United States alone, said Claire Ferraro, associate publisher of Ballentine-Del Ray-Fawcett Books. The author's son, Maynard MacDonald, said his father had recently been working on a new novel about the detective who was once described as "sort of a knight in slightly tarnished armor" and lived in Florida on a houseboat called "Busted Flush" that he won in a card game. Two of the novels were turned into motion pictures but MacDonald disliked seeing his works rewritten for the screen, his son said. ABC tried a McGee television series three years ago, but the project was abandoned after a pilot based on the novel "The Empty Copper Sea." In 1972, the Mystery Writers of America awarded MacDonald their Edgar Grand Master award, the group's highest honor. His McGee novel "The Green Ripper" won the American Book Award's mystery competition in 1980.
John Dann MacDonald was born in Sharon, July 24, 1916. After getting a master's degree from the Harvard School of Business, he spent 30 months with the Army in the China-Burma-India theater during World War IT, mostly with the Office of Strategic Services, and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He began writing fiction because he was not permitted to write about the clandestine operations he was familiar with, his son said. "It was out of frustration," he said. The author's first works were published soon after his discharge in 1945.
He moved to Utica, N.Y., and continued writing for magazines, including Esquire and Cosmopolitan. JOHN D. MacDONALD Creator of 'Travis McGee' He moved to Texas in 1946 and took up writing full-time. He later moved back to New York, to Mexico, and finally to Florida, where he and his wife have lived since 1949. In 1950, MacDonald published his first book, "The Brass Cupcake." By 1964 he had written 43 books and was ready to create McGee, who made his debut in "The Deep Blue Good-by." MacDonald refused to let that book be published until he had written three more in the series, saying he wanted to have room to flesh out the character.
Other titles in the series include Tan and Sandy Silence" and "Free Fall in Crimson." The last, published in 1985, was "The Lonely Silver Rain." Boil water order remains in effect in Massac County BROOKPORT, Ill. A boilwater order for residents here remained in effect today, according to a spokesman for the Fort Massac Water District. The order applies to water customers along U.S. 45 to Parkerville, and was issued because of a leak. "A 20-foot section of an 8-inch water main split in two," said bookeeper Marguerite Beans.
